A Brief History Of Motorhomes

From the early 1900’s, quite a few attempts were made to develop a motor home but usually resulted in something extremely unsightly and expensive. It wasn’t until 1938 that the Jennings company developed a motorhome that fitted to the chassis of existing vehicles. However, production was halted, most likely due to World War 2.

Shortly after the war, we saw the development of the extremely versatile VW ‘Type 2’ which we now refer to as the VW campervan although it’s uses at that time were assigned to freight and business uses (milk floats and delivery vans etc.). It wasn’t until the beginning of the 50’s that the motorhome for ‘leisure’ purposes was developed, more out of a need to satisfy the travelling businessman who took his family away at the weekend.

Even today, many people still think of motorhomes in terms of those earlier models: discomfort, a lack of space, too cold at night and sweltering in the heat of a summers day.

The reality, of course, is that motorhomes today are extremely luxurious, spacious and can be literally a ‘home from home’. This has helped to keep camping big business within today’s tourist industry and due to the modern facilities in today’s motorhomes, all the inconveniences associated with camping in years gone by are no longer an issue.
